Quick Navigation

Unfortunately, if your coffee maker is not properly taken care of it can begin to accumulate mold and bacteria on its internal surfaces. This article will walk you through 10 steps for how to clean your Keurig coffee maker so that it stays looking new and can continue to provide tasty cups of joe for years to come.

1. Unplug the unit from the wall and allow it to cool down.

When cleaning a Keurig Coffee Maker, you’ll want to make sure that it is unplugged. This will avoid any chance of electric shock while working with water inside the device. Additionally, if your coffee maker has been on for several hours or more, it will be at a safe temperature for the next step.

Make sure to allow the coffee maker to cool down before continuing with your cleaning process! You wouldn’t want a pot of hot water or cleaners spilling into an open electrical device, would you? Be careful and patient so that you avoid injury as well as damage in this key initial phase of the cleaning process.

2. Remove the water reservoir and wash it with a mild soap.

In order to clean your Keurig Coffee Maker, you’ll need to remove its water reservoir. To do this, simply push on the handle that is located in front of the device at an angle towards the bottom until it pops out. The body should follow suit as you pull it towards you.

Once the reservoir is out, use a mild soap and water to clean all of the interior surfaces. Be sure to rinse everything thoroughly afterwards. Pay special attention to the small screen located at the bottom of the reservoir – if this becomes clogged with residue, your coffee maker will not function correctly.

3. Fill the reservoir with vinegar and water.

Now that the water reservoir is clean, it’s time to move on to the next step. This involves filling it with a mixture of vinegar and water. For every gallon of water, add two cups of white vinegar.

Once you’ve added the vinegar mixture, place the reservoir back in its position and allow it to sit for several hours. The vinegar will loosen the grime stuck on your coffee maker’s internal surfaces and make cleaning much easier!

4. Plug in the coffee maker and run a brew cycle with plain water.

Now that the vinegar has had time to work its magic, it’s time for the next step. This involves running a brew cycle with only plain water. Be sure to use hot water for this step in order to rinse all of the vinegar out of your coffee maker.

It’s important to note that you should do this step even if you don’t think your coffee maker needs it. Running a brew cycle with plain water after using any type of cleaning solution is always a good idea in order to make sure everything is completely rinsed out.

5. Remove the water reservoir again and use a paper towel to wipe out any residue.

You’ve run one brew cycle with plain water, so why not go for two? At this point you should have removed your Keurig Coffee Maker’s reservoir in order to make sure it was properly rinsed. Now is the perfect time to go back and give the inside a quick wipe with a paper towel.

6. Fill the reservoir with descaling solution and run a brew cycle.

Now it’s time to move on to the final step of your cleaning process – descaling your coffee maker. For this, you’ll need to fill the water reservoir with a descaling solution (available at most stores).

Once you’ve added the descaling solution, place the reservoir back in place and run a brew cycle. This will draw the solution through your coffee maker’s internal tubes, cleaning out all of the grime that was loosened by vinegar.

7. Repeat steps five and six until the water in the reservoir is clear.

After running a brew cycle with descaling solution, it’s time to check the progress of your cleaning. To do this, simply look at the water in the reservoir and make sure that it is now clear. If not, repeat steps five and six until it is.

8. Remove the water reservoir again and use a damp cloth to wipe out any residual residue.

You’ve run three brew cycles, so it’s time for one last round of cleaning. At this point you’re going to want to remove your Keurig Coffee Maker’s water reservoir in order to give its interior a final check over with a damp cloth. Be sure to wipe out all of the residue – this will help keep your coffee maker functioning properly in the future!

9. Let your coffee maker air dry.

Now that you’re finished cleaning your Keurig Coffee Maker, it’s time to give it a chance to dry. Be sure to leave the reservoir off and the power cord unplugged until everything is completely dry.

10. Enjoy your coffee maker!

Once your Keurig Coffee Maker has finished drying, you’ll be ready to use it again. Be sure not to forget any of the steps above in order to keep your machine working properly for years – and enjoy a perfect cup of coffee each time!
